Fixed Braces vs. Removable Braces: Which Option is Right for Me?

Brace face, metal mouth, train tracks, or names even worse than that. Those are just a few of the slang terms you may have been called in school if you were a braces wearer. While many kids have been teased for having braces, they’ve also benefitted by having nicer smiles than those who picked on them.

Braces technology has come a long way, and there are now less noticeable options to help correct your teeth. There are plenty of advantages that come along with both fixed and removable braces. Your dentist can help you decide which option is best for you.

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are still a popular and effective treatment option. They are attached to your teeth by metal bands or a special cement. They are semi-permanent and are not removed until your treatment is complete. Fixed braces are generally needed for more complex dental issues.

  • Less Maintenance – The fact that you don’t have to take your braces out to clean them makes them easier to maintain. You also can’t lose or damage them while they are out of your mouth.
  • Working 24/7 – Your fixed braces remain in place and work around the clock to fix your teeth with a more precise treatment than removable braces.
  • Not Always Noticeable – In the past fixed braces were easily noticeable with all their metal wires and brackets. Ceramic braces now provide many of the same benefits but are far less noticeable. Lingual braces are totally hidden and can still fix your smile.

Removable Braces

Removable braces are typically worn for about 22 hours per day and can be easily taken off. They are often used for patients with common orthodontic problems that are easier to fix including tooth alignment issues.

  • Invisibility – Removable braces such as Invisalign are clear and cannot be seen by others. This gives the wearer more self-confidence.
  • Eat What You Want – With fixed braces you have to watch what you eat. Removable braces allow you to take your aligners out and eat whatever foods you like. You can then brush and floss and put your braces back in.
  • Easy to Care For – It’s easier to brush and floss if you don’t have your braces fixed to your teeth. Removable braces give you a chance to take a break and clean your mouth before you put them back in.
